On a day most auspicious, Friday the 13, we are treated to the next chapter of the Insidious story. My feelings for Insidious are complex, in a good way.
I attended the first chapter expecting the same as most horror films. I was treated to a few
jumps and eerie sounds, but as the story pushed forward, away from the norm of most ghost stories, I came face to face with a familiar genre. The story takes a deep dive into the world of Sci-Fi and I, for one, was greatly pleased with where it lead me. I couldn't help but feel like this horror movie wasn't designed for young boys to take their new girlfriends to and score cuddle points. No, this was something else entirely. The story puts you not only in the world of the supernatural, but also in the realm of the super human. Our protagonists are able to defend themselves against the spectral terrors as they discover their special abilities. This is enough to keep me interested in a bloated genre, but the acting is believable, the characters are strong and some of them are even funny. I was happy not to see the classic clichés of most horror films but to see someone taking it to a new, and a satisfyingly refreshing, level. As you could probably guess, I had high hopes for the sequel and quickly realized that this wasn't a sequel, but a true progression of the story. The last few moments of the movie are revisited, characters briefly introduced and then we are given a look at what happened after the credits rolled last we saw our haunted family. The best part of the expansion is the holes it fills, but it doesn't just fill them, it uses the small details from the previous chapter to progress the new story in a unique way. The theater was filled with "Ah ha!" moments as we slowly pieced together the story with new clues and explanations. Even though we knew the gist of what was happening, we found out that the devil was truly hiding in the details. The second chapter of Insidious is not a sequel, but the second act of a great story.
With a new plot to explore, and mechanics that keep you guessing about where the story will take you, Insidious is great way to kick off this horror season.
